are four companies that manufacture chemicals — Aditya Birla
Nuvo Ltd, Grasim Industries Ltd, Aditya Birla Chemicals (India)
Limited (formerly known as Bihar Caustic and Chemicals Limited)
and Tanfac Industries Ltd.
Chlor-alkali
The chlor-alkali plant of Aditya Birla
Chemicals (Thailand) Ltd is located in the Eastern Industrial
Estate at Map Tha Phut in Rayong province of Thailand. The
division commenced production of chlor-alkali products in
June 1998. The products include caustic soda 50per cent (capacity
108,000 mt per annum), chlorine 99.9 per cent (45,000), hydrochloric
acid 35 per cent (50,000) and sodium hypochlorite 11per cent
(25,000).
The chlor-alkali plant of Aditya Birla Nuvo is located at
Veraval, in Gujarat state, India. It has a capacity of 58,400
tpa of caustic soda which is being expanded by another 14,600
tpa. The plant has been rated by UHDE, Germany, as a benchmark
unit amongst Indian chlor-alkali units and comparable with
the best in the world.
Grasim Industries' chlor-alkali plant is located at Nagda,
in Madhya Pradesh state, India. Its capacity is 190,800 tpa,
including an 18,250 tpa flake plant, making it the country's
second largest caustic soda unit.
Aditya
Birla Chemicals (India) Limited (formerly
known as Bihar Caustic and Chemicals Limited) is one of the
leading chlor alkali companies in India. The plant has been
commissioned in 1984 and located at Garhwa Road, Palamau district,
Jharkhand, India. The company has been the first in the chlor
alkali sector in India to be certified with four international
certifications — ISO 9001: 2000, ISO 14001:2004, OHSAS 18001:1999
and SA 8000:2001. Its product range includes caustic soda
lye with a capacity of 92,750 tpa, liquid chlorine (6,500
tpa), hydrochloric acid (43,750 tpa), sodium hypochlorite
(1,800 tpa), compressed hydrogen gas (17,42,400 Nm3/A), aluminium
chloride (12,000 tpa) and stable bleaching powder (17,500
tpa).
The plant uses the most-modern, energy-efficient
and environment friendly membrane cell technology. With the
implementation of membrane cell technology, caustic soda capacity
has increased from 160 to 265 tpd. The company also has a
state-of-the-art 30 mw captive power plant for uninterrupted
power supply.

Epichlorohydrin
Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) Ltd started
manufacturing epichlorohydrin in October 1998. The epichlorohydrin
unit is located at the Eastern Industrial Estate at Maptaphut
in Rayong Province, Thailand. Apart from 10,000 mt of epichlorohydrin
99.9 per cent every year, the unit produces 3,000 mt of allyl
chloride 99 per cent and 2,400 mt of dichloropropane.
Epoxy Resins
The epoxy unit of Aditya Birla Chemicals is
located at the Map Tha Phut Industrial Estate at Rayong province,
Thailand. The unit, started in 1992, offers a wide range of
epoxies and modifiers with different chemical structure, molecular
weight, viscosity and functionality. The unit has a capacity
of 35,000 tpa. It markets its products under the brand name
Epotec.
Fluorine Chemicals
Tanfac Industries Ltd, is one of India's
largest suppliers of fluorine chemicals. Incorporated in 1972,
it is a joint sector company promoted by several Aditya Birla
Group Companies and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation
(TIDCO). Its plant and facilities are spread over 60 acres in
the chemical complex of SIPCOT at Cuddalore near Pondicherry,
about 200 kms from Chennai, Tamil Nadu state.
Tanfac is engaged in the manufacture of inorganic
fluorine based chemicals such as aluminium fluoride, anhydrous
hydrofluoric acid, sodium silico fluoride, ammonium bifluoride,
potassium fluoride, cryolite and various other organic fluorine
based chemicals. The company has an annual production capacity
of 16,500 tons of aluminium fluoride, 66,000 tons of sulphuric
acid, 14,000 tons of hydrofluoric acid and 3,500 tons of speciality
fluorines.

Peroxides
Thai Peroxide & Company Ltd has its 11,000
tpa plant in Saraburi province of Thailand. The unit manufactures
35 and 50 per cent concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Products
for environment and aquaculture applications are sold under
brand names like ECARE and ENCARE. The plant, which began
operations in 1989, also offers special product grades to
suit the customer's application needs.
Phosphates
The phosphates plant, with a 85,000 tpa capacity,
is located in Samutprakarn about 20 kilometers from Bangkok,
the capital of Thailand. It was commissioned in 1984.
The state-of-the art manufacturing facility at Samutprakarn
uses the proprietary phosphate processes and has a capacity
of over 80,000 mtpa for both tech-grade and food-grade phosphates.
The plant consists of a sophisticated DCS instrumentation system
for automated process control, several neutralising tanks for
raw materials input, spray dryers for powder crystallisation,
rotary kiln for heat induced chemical reactions, instantiser,
packing and warehousing facilities.
Creative phosphate solutions are tailored to address client's
specific needs. The application research team fine tunes phosphate
blends to attain optimal formulations that are most suitable
for clients' production processes. There is also a fully equipped
modern laboratory, research kitchen and a sensory testing room
for in-house analysis.
Only after the in-house results are completely satisfactory,
that the clients are provided with a small batch of the blended
phosphates for further testing on their actual manufacturing
premises. Any feedback is then noted for improvement on the
next batch. Such continuous testing provides ongoing refinement
to achieve 100 per cent customer satisfaction.
The main products are sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate,
sodium acid phosphate, monosodium phosphate, disodium phosphate,
trisodium phosphate and speciality blended phosphates used in
customised food applications.
The brands, under which the products are marketed, are Polyphos,
Seaphos, Noodlephos and Saus Plus.
