The manufacturing activities of the chemicals business of the Aditya Birla Group span nine units, five at Thailand and four in India. In Thailand, there are two legal entities — Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) Ltd and Thai Peroxide Company Ltd. In India, there are four companies that manufacture chemicals — Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd, Grasim Industries Ltd, Bihar Caustic and Chemicals Ltd and Tanfac Industries Ltd.

Chlor-alkali
The chlor-alkali plant of Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) Ltd is located in the Eastern Industrial Estate at Map Tha Phut in Rayong province of Thailand. The division commenced production of chlor-alkali products in June 1998. The products include caustic soda 50per cent (capacity 108,000 mt per annum), chlorine 99.9 per cent (45,000), hydrochloric acid 35 per cent (50,000) and sodium hypochlorite 11per cent (25,000).

The chlor-alkali plant of Aditya Birla Nuvo is located at Veraval, in Gujarat state, India. It has a capacity of 58,400 tpa of caustic soda which is being expanded by another 14,600 tpa. The plant has been rated by UHDE, Germany, as a benchmark unit amongst Indian chlor-alkali units and comparable with the best in the world.
Grasim Industries' chlor-alkali plant is located at Nagda, in Madhya Pradesh state, India. Its capacity is 190,800 tpa, including an 18,250 tpa flake plant, making it the country's second largest caustic soda unit.

Bihar Caustic and Chemicals Ltd is one of the leading chlor alkali companies in India. The plant has been commissioned in 1984 and located at Garhwa Road, Palamau district, Jharkhand, India. The company has been the first in the chlor alkali sector in India to be certified with four international certifications — ISO 9001: 2000, ISO 14001:2004, OHSAS 18001:1999 and SA 8000:2001. Its product range includes caustic soda lye with a capacity of 92,750 tpa, liquid chlorine (6,500 tpa), hydrochloric acid (43,750 tpa), sodium hypochlorite (1,800 tpa), compressed hydrogen gas (17,42,400 Nm3/A), aluminium chloride (12,000 tpa) and stable bleaching powder (17,500 tpa)


The plant uses the most-modern, energy-efficient and environment friendly membrane cell technology. With the implementation of membrane cell technology, caustic soda capacity has increased from 160 to 265 tpd. The company also has a state-of-the-art 30 mw captive power plant for uninterrupted power supply.

Epichlorohydrin

Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) Ltd started manufacturing epichlorohydrin in October 1998. The epichlorohydrin unit is located at the Eastern Industrial Estate at Maptaphut in Rayong Province, Thailand. Apart from 10,000 mt of epichlorohydrin 99.9 per cent every year, the unit produces 3,000 mt of allyl chloride 99 per cent and 2,400 mt of dichloropropane.

Epoxy Resins

The epoxy unit of Aditya Birla Chemicals is located at the Map Tha Phut Industrial Estate at Rayong province, Thailand. The unit, started in 1992, offers a wide range of epoxies and modifiers with different chemical structure, molecular weight, viscosity and functionality. The unit has a capacity of 35,000 tpa. It markets its products under the brand name Epotec.

Fluorine Chemicals
Tanfac Industries Ltd, is one of India's largest suppliers of fluorine chemicals. Incorporated in 1972, it is a joint sector company promoted by several Aditya Birla Group Companies and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO). Its plant and facilities are spread over 60 acres in the chemical complex of SIPCOT at Cuddalore near Pondicherry, about 200 kms from Chennai, Tamil Nadu state.

Tanfac is engaged in the manufacture of inorganic fluorine based chemicals such as aluminium fluoride, anhydrous hydrofluoric acid, sodium silico fluoride, ammonium bifluoride, potassium fluoride, cryolite and various other organic fluorine based chemicals. The company has an annual production capacity of 16,500 tons of aluminium fluoride, 66,000 tons of sulphuric acid, 14,000 tons of hydrofluoric acid and 3,500 tons of speciality fluorines.

Peroxides

Thai Peroxide & Company Ltd has its 11,000 tpa plant in Saraburi province of Thailand. The unit manufactures 35 and 50 per cent concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Products for environment and aquaculture applications are sold under brand names like ECARE and ENCARE. The plant, which began operations in 1989, also offers special product grades to suit the customer's application needs.

Phosphates
The phosphates plant, with a 85,000 TPA capacity, is located in Samutprakarn about 20 km from Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. It was commissioned in 1984. Its main products are sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium acid phosphate, monosodium phosphate, disodium phosphate, trisodium phosphate and speciality blended phosphates used in customised food applications.

The brands, under which the products are marketed, are Polyphos, Seaphos, Noodlephos and Saus Plus

Sulphites

The state-of-the-art manufacturing plant of the sulphites unit of Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) Ltd is located about 110 kilometres from Bangkok in Saraburi province. This division, started in 1995, has an annual capacity of 47,000 mt. It produces sodium sulphite, sodium metabisulphite and sodium bisulphite sold under the brand names BIRLASULF SS, BIRLASULF SM and BIRLASOL 35, respectively.
